Banded Bird Sightings
If you have seen any birds in Auckland that have colour bands on their legs, whether in your own garden, or at your local park, make a note of it and let me know using the form below. Any sightings will be very helpful. You'll need to note down the date, time and location of the sighting (be as specific as possible), and the bird species, band combination, and any other information about the bird's behaviour.
Remember to note down the following information: Sighting date & time Location Species Band combination Any other behavioural observations How to read a band combination: Combinations are read from top to bottom, left to right. So, for example, the sparrow in the picture has a green band above a metal band on the left leg, and a blue band above a yellow band on the right leg. Its band combination will be: LM-BY. Make sure you know which leg is which! We are talking about the bird's left leg. So if the bird is facing away from you, the left leg will be on your left too. If the bird is facing toward you, the left leg will be on your right. BAND COLOURS M = metal, B = blue, HP = bright pink, K = black, L = light green, O = orange, R = red, Y = yellow, W = white |
