New Zealand Bird Feeding Study 2011–2016
Kia ora. My name is Josie Galbraith. I am conducting a research project on birds living in urban areas for my PhD at the University of Auckland. The aim of this study is to find out why some birds are more successful than others in urban environments. Specifically, I am interested in the practice of wild bird feeding.
As part of my study I am setting up experimental bird feeding stations on the North Shore, Auckland. One of these might be in your neighbourhood. These feeders will be operating for the next 2 years. You might notice nesting boxes for birds in some trees in the area, and birds in your garden with coloured bands on their legs. These are part of my study as well. I am interested in any sightings of the birds banded as part of this study. If you notice any birds with coloured bands on their legs, you can click here to record the sighting in a database. In particular, it is important to note down the time, date, and location of the sighting, and the species, band combination, and any other information about the bird's behaviour. If you would like to get involved in the study, or if you want more information, contact me by clicking here. Or check out my University Profile Page. A big thank you to everyone who participated in the New Zealand Bird Feeding Survey! |
